Aussie-led project delivers new DAF XG and XG+

New-generation flagships deliver comfort, safety, technology and higher levels of performance and efficiency from the hulking 15-litre engine

DAF Trucks Australia has launched two new flagship models, the DAF XG and XG+, with PACCAR’s Bayswater engineering team working in partnership with the company’s centres of excellence around the globe to complete a project where there are “no more trade-offs between performance, safety or technology”.

First previewed by trucksales at the 2023 Brisbane Truck Show - the XG and XG+ are powered by the 15-litre, Euro 6-compliant PACCAR PX-15 engine, which has been revised to deliver 660hp at 1800rpm and 3200Nm of torque between 900 to 1400rpm. To harness the high torque output, the Australian-manufactured XG and XG+ are fitted with the ZF TraXon 16-speed automated gearbox.

The New Generation DAF trucks have the most extensive range of active and passive safety features ever provided by the brand. Both models have a 270-degree corner view camera that effectively reduces blind spots on the passenger side and the front of the vehicle.

There’s also the full suite of DAF safety systems, including vehicle stability control, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and an advanced emergency braking system.

Meanwhile, DAF has leveraged updated European regulations on the cab design, which features a redesigned front grille for improved cooling and aerodynamics, 220-litre toolboxes on both sides, and easy access with three evenly spaced steps.

The exterior design features an elongated cab design that provides two main benefits: aerodynamic efficiency and a spacious interior. The efficiency is enhanced by innovative features such as closed wheel arch covers, the design of the side mirrors and an extensively curved windscreen.

Inside, there’s a multi-function steering wheel, 12-inch central screen, and also a 10-inch display that provides access to the DAF Infotainment System which has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation and more.

DAF claims the cab is whisper quiet, thanks to soundproofing and isolation along with an enhanced front suspension and damper design that minimises vibration in the driveline, seats and steering.

The cabs provide excellent accommodation, with sizable room to stand upright and ample space behind the wheel and throughout the cab. The rear cab area transforms into a retreat for rest, relaxation and sleep.

The extended length and flat floor of the cabs also contribute to greater comfort and freedom of movement for the driver. The XG and XG+ boast interior standing heights of more than 2m.
