“It’s not always about the finances, it’s about doing the right things.”
Bob & Pete’s Bakery is more than just a business; it’s a model of how passion, sustainability, and smart partnerships can create a successful and responsible enterprise.
Faced with significant waste management challenges, the bakery partnered with Mil-tek to implement waste balers to reduce their waste volume and environmental footprint as well as reinforce their commitment to sustainability.
“There is a tremendous partnership between Mil-tek and Bob & Pete’s, and we really enjoy that”
Watch the case video, where Operations Manager at Bob & Pete’s, Satchi Bakshi, tells about the transformation to a new and more sustainable waste management solution.
From small beginnings to pastry excellence
Bob & Pete’s Bakery started in 1983 when Bob Yates and Peter Dawson decided to make and deliver high-quality pastries in Sydney to a few corner stores on Sunday mornings.
From these humble beginnings, Bob & Pete’s Bakery has grown into one of New South Wales’ leading suppliers of pastries to cafés, restaurants, caterers, and retailers.
Persistent focus on sustainability
The company pride itself on not just their great products, but also their fantastic team, positive culture, and a strong and persistent focus on sustainability. They are well aware that handling and processing waste take a lot of tolls on the environment, and they believe their job is to help reduce it.
Partnered with Mil-tek to streamline recycling initiatives
Bob & Pete’s Bakery already had a focus on minimizing the creation of waste, proper segregation and recycling. For example, they brought back packaging boxes from their customers in order to recycle them.
Current solution was expensive and space-consuming
This was a cumbersome and expensive process though, and packaging waste still occupied a lot of space at their premises. It was clearly not enough to address the growing waste management issue comprehensively.
Recognizing the need for a more efficient and sustainable solution, Bob & Pete’s Bakery partnered with Mil-tek.
Cutting costs and carbon footprint with balers and a compactor
After thorough advice on solutions, Mil-tek installed pneumatic balers and an XP200S general waste compactor. The bakery began compacting various types of waste, including cardboard, plastic, paper bags, and general waste.
This marked a turning point for the bakery, resulting in:
- A significant reduction in the space occupied by waste, leading to more efficient use of their premises.
- A drastic cut down on frequency and costs of waste disposal, as less frequent collections were required.
- Less handling of waste, which meant savings on fuel and transportation costs and therefore also a reduction of the bakery’s overall carbon footprint.
- Avoiding double handling and increasing efficiency ensured a streamlined and more sustainable approach to waste management.
User-friendly balers were well-received by employees
Mil-tek provided thorough training for the bakery staff, ensuring smooth and effective use of the new equipment. The new waste handling processes were well-received by the employees at Bob & Pete’s.
Work smoothly during the working day, never any issues
The machines operate on compressed air and feature very simple operation, making them both safe and very user-friendly to operate during the workday. The reliable performance of the Mil-tek machines means that this solution has run smoothly for Bob & Pete’s since installation.
