DuPont Arc Rated NOMEX Clothing
It is used in Motor Racing and Jet Pilot garments for this very reason. The flame retardant properties of this fabric are not due to treating, but are characteristics of the material itself, meaning no matter how old the garment is, it still retains its effectiveness with almost no deterioration.
The NOMEX Arc Flash garments are tested to various levels, ranging from 4kA for 500ms up to 7kA for 0.5sec. This is roughly equal to a 15Cal/cm2 rating. The weatherproof parka is actually rated to 10ka/1sec when worn with i'ts woollen zip-in vest.
Temperatures in these Arc Flash ‘explosions’ or incidents reach over 20,000’C, and are reduced to a safe level before contact with the skin by the garments. This figure is a guide only, and the level of protection does become better when more than one item of clothing is worn.
Being tested to a certain kA rating for a certain time, means that therefore they are also able to sustain a higher fault current arc for shorter time periods. Just because they are only tested to 7kA or 4kA for instance, does not mean this is the maximum fault current they can be used for. It is a time dependant relationship, however it is non-linear and thus not simple to calculate.
NOMEX is a permanent flame retardant material, and is also permanently anti-static. The material will not loose these qualities whatsoever with age and provides the best protection possible for the entire lifespan of the garment. As has been mentioned, this is very good for Arc Flash protection in the Industry. NOMEX is however also used as general flame and heat protection, as well as for its antistatic properties, in the petrochemical and gas industries.
Many different types of Garments are available to suit anyone’s needs. Extreme Safety supply the following NOMEX products:
All garments are permanently Antistatic.
